Turning comments off on a post
Publish something that is not up for discussion.
OperatorsToggle Disable comments when composing. The post publishes normally and shows "Comments are off for this post" instead of a comment box. Reactions still work.
When it is the right call
- A decision that has been made and is not being relitigated
- Anything touching an individual child, where a comment thread would be inappropriate
- Sensitive news — an injury, a cancellation, a departure
- A post going up right before you go offline for the weekend
When it is not
Ordinary announcements. Comments are where parents ask the obvious follow-up question, and answering it once in public saves you six identical messages.
Changing it later
Edit the post and toggle it. Existing comments are hidden while comments are off and return if you turn them back on.
Tip: If you find yourself locking most posts, the problem is not the comments. Look at what is making the conversation go badly.
